Former leaders honoured

Preveza, Greece – Former President of Douzelage Annigje Kruytbosch (Meerssen, NL) and former Vice Presidents Miha Jese (Škofja Loka, SI), Mette Grith Sørensen (Holstebro, DK), and Tibi Rotaru (Siret, RO) (absent) were today formally recognised as Honorary President and Honorary Vice Presidents of Douzelage during the organisation’s General Meeting in Preveza, Greece.

The honour — traditionally bestowed upon all past presidents and vice presidents of Douzelage — was proposed by current Vice President Evelin Koev (Tryavna, BG) before being unanimously approved by the assembly.

“This recognition is not only about titles, it’s about gratitude,” said Shane Smyth current President of Douzelage. “Annigje, Miha, Mette, and Tibi have each given immense dedication, energy, and vision to Douzelage over the years. Their leadership has shaped the organisation we are proud to carry forward today. It is an honour to acknowledge their contributions formally, and to know they will continue to inspire future generations of Douzelagers.”

The moment was marked with applause and warm tributes from delegates across Europe, underlining the respect and appreciation for the newly appointed honorary members.

Douzelage, a network of towns across the European Union and beyond, has for almost 35 years fostered collaboration, friendship, and exchange at the grassroots level. The recognition of past leaders reflects the organisation’s strong tradition of continuity, celebrating those who have built the foundations of cross-cultural cooperation.
