Parade of nations and tree planting starts Malta GM

Marsaskala, Malta – In “Olympic spirit”, the 50th Douzelage General Meeting programme commenced with a parade of nations along the promenade of Marsaskala, Malta on Thursday evening (3rd September 2026) culminating at St Anne’s Gardens and the offices of Marsaskala Local Council.

Delegates and guests from more than 20 member countries from across Europe gathered excitedly for the parade which began on the sea front at the Douzelage monument which was dedicated in 2011 to mark the 20th anniversary of the unique town twinning organization. A sea of colour followed with national flags and delegates led by the St Anne’s Band and members of the local girl guides.

On reaching St Anne’s Gardens, a ceremonial flag raising was completed to mark the official start of events of the three day programme with the Douzelage flag raised alongside that of the European Union, Malta and Bundoran (Ireland – home of the current president).
